The BBAs world whisky category takes in all whiskies outside of American, Irish and Scotch - here's the top 5 from the session.
At this point it comes as no surprise that Starward has been named our World Whisky Champion. Perhaps what might raise an eyebrow is that the Australian whisky’s 100 Proof took the highest taste score in the entire BBAs. The notes came in the form of “nutty, toffee, pecan, maple” but none better summarised the sentiment than: “Fucking delicious.”
The single malt took silver for its packaging with the quality of the liquid leading the argument that, versus the price, this was good value for money. Another Australian single malt took second, with three scores which were each just shy of a gold. Morris Muscat Barrels was described as having “vanilla, oak and caramel notes” with a “fruity” finish.
In third was another of the World Whiskies to cement their reputations in the past decade: Stauning from Denmark. Its Rye took silvers for taste (“nutty, cereal and creamy”) and value with its design taking gold – “modern, tactile, with great label info” said judges.
In fourth was Indian Rampur Asava, which judges loved for its “tropical notes” with “coffee and caramel” to the fore, giving it gold. The same taste score went to Starward Solera, noted for its “fruity deep flavour”, “nice length and balance”
