First up in our serialised results of the BBAs 2024 is a big one in the bar world - American Whiskey. Here's how it went...

In the American whiskey category, Uncle Nearest made a wide field feel narrow, taking three of our top five overall scores. It was the Tennessee-based brand’s Single Barrel Rye that stole the show, with a fine overall score of 77/100.

Our specialist panel scored it gold on taste, noting “spice”, “nuts”, with a good “balance of fruity sweetness”. It took silvers in design and value for money. Yet on score alone, it wasn’t the best-tasting product in the category – that accolade went to family member Uncle Nearest Uncut & Unfiltered Straight Rye, which took 45/50 on taste on its way to an overall score of 72/100.

The panel picked up on moreish flavours of “vanilla ice cream” and “marshmallow”. Joining the podium was Whistlepig 10 Year Old.

This Canadian-American hybrid was noted for its spicy apple palate with a long finish and its more than reasonable price, but it was the design that struck gold.

Fourth spot went to Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Aged, a place up on last year. Its “creamy toffee” flavours and “smooth body” earned it a silver, which it matched in design.

Rounding off our top five was another rye – Sagamore Signature Cast Strength. Described as having “chewy”, “toffee”, “spicy” and “sweet” qualities, it took the third highest score on taste.
